Small and Less Known Groups

The activities of the Association's small and less known groups with intellectual disabilities are aimed at persons with rare intellectual disabilities, their families, close friends and social welfare and health
care professionals.

Due to the rareness of these intellectual disabilities, persons in these groups and their families might find it more difficult than usual to find information and other persons in the same situation as well as to receive help in the service system.

The Finnish Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Kehitysvammaisten Tukiliitto) serves families, professionals and students by:

- providing information on small and less known intellectual disabilities
and related problems
- helping families to find other families through family meetings and
maintaining a list of support families
- training families and professionals
- supporting societies and other parent groups with their aims
- co-operating with the public sector and other organisations

There are diagnostic discussion groups (Angelman, Cornelia de Lange and Rett) in the intellectual disability web service verneri.net. In addition, parents can set up Internet-based discussion groups about other topics and intellectual disabilities. The discussions can be read at Verneri.
